This past May (2024), I had the amazing opportunity to go to Geneva, Switzerland, as a guest artist and educator for the Mapping Festival. It’s an international gathering of visual artists, coders, and performers who are all pushing the boundaries of digital art.
For two weeks, I got to work alongside the incredible David Lublin and the team from GarageCube / MadMapper, presenting, teaching, and connecting with artists from all over the world. It wasn’t just a conference; it was a total creative recharge.
One of the highlights for me was co-leading a two-day workshop on creating custom shaders with GLSL and ISF (Interactive Shader Format) for real-time visual software like VDMX and MadMapper. It was a blast to dive deep into creative coding and show people how to build their own tools for VJ sets and installations. For anyone who couldn’t make it, we posted the slides and notes online here: bit.ly/isf-mapping-2024.
But the festival was about so much more than the tech. It was about the people. It was about trading shader tips with coders from three different continents, sharing ideas with fellow projection artists over fondue, and watching a set that completely melted the ceiling off a club. Every moment was a reminder of how connected and inspiring this global community is. And Geneva itself was absolutely stunning.
The festival team put together a fantastic recap video that captures the energy of the event perfectly.
I left feeling so inspired and grateful. A huge thank you to David Lublin, the entire GarageCube / MadMapper team, the organizers of the Mapping Festival, and every single artist and student who showed up ready to explore and create. Thanks for making it an experience I won’t forget.
